Decorating Your First House

If you’re planning on moving to your first house soon, you may be overwhelmed by the thought of transitioning from a smaller place to your first actual home. Here are some of our suggestions for how to prepare your new pad for move in.

Paint First

Nothing revamps a room faster than a new coat of paint. Painting a house with no furniture inside is so much easier than covering everything in plastic wrap, so make sure you paint before you move everything in! Using warm neutral colors ensures you won’t get tired of the color of your walls, and also helps showcase your patterned textiles. A neutral wall color is an easy way to give your home a comforting and welcoming feeling.

Don’t Buy Everything at Once

We know it’s difficult, but try to resist the temptation to buy everything all at once. Save your money for higher quality pieces that will last you through the years. Before you buy a piece of furniture, ask yourself: Do I really love it? Is it made well? Is it versatile enough? You want whatever you buy to be functional and able to adapt to various styles over the coming years. Yard and estate sales are a great place to go to find bargains and unique pieces for your home.

Focus on the Bedroom

Considering most people spend about a third of their time in their bedroom, it’s important to invest some time and money in creating a room you’re happy to spend time in. If you’re working with a tight budget, start with new bedding. Contrary to popular belief, thread count is not the most important thing to look for when buying bedding. Instead, pay attention to the fiber and weave of the fabric. Look for bedding with longer fibers; this means the yarn is stronger and has been spun more times, reducing pilling in the fabric. Some good quality fibers include Egyptian and organic cotton, Pima and Supima, and even bamboo.

Invest in a Good Couch

A good couch can last forever, so if you can, it’s best to spend a little more money for a better quality one. A neutral colored couch may seem boring right now, but you’ll be thankful later when you find your couch can easily adapt to your changing tastes and preferences. Having pattered pillows allows you to change up your color scheme when you get bored.
